Step 1: Start With Gain Staging

Don’t worry about making the track loud yet.
You want enough headroom so that later processing doesn’t constantly push your channels or master output into clipping.
More importantly, listen to what the mix actually needs.
Ask yourself:
Is the kick disappearing?
Is the 808 overpowering everything?
Are the vocals buried?
Are the keys fighting with the vocal?
Does the mix feel narrow?
Those questions should determine which plugins you reach for.
Don’t insert a compressor just because you’re mixing.
Insert one because you have a dynamics problem you want to solve.
Step 2: Mix the Kick
Your kick establishes a large part of the groove and impact of a Hip Hop record.
Start with Renaissance EQ.
Use it to remove frequencies that aren’t contributing to the sound and shape the kick so it works alongside your bass.
Rather than automatically boosting the lows, listen to where the kick’s weight actually lives.
You may find useful energy somewhere around:
50–100 Hz for low-end weight.
100–250 Hz for body.

These aren’t rules.

If the kick sounds muddy, look through the low mids before simply boosting the high end.
Add Compression If Necessary

Release: 50–150 ms

A slightly slower attack can allow some of the kick’s initial transient through before the compressor reacts.

Step 3: Make the Snare or Clap Hit
Hip Hop and R&B snares often need to cut through a dense arrangement without becoming painfully bright.
Start with Renaissance EQ and listen for unnecessary low-frequency content.
You can usually remove frequencies below the useful range of the snare or clap, but don’t blindly high-pass everything.
Then listen to the midrange.
Depending on the sound, you might investigate:
150–300 Hz for body.
1–3 kHz for presence.
5–10 kHz for snap and brightness.
Again, sweep and listen rather than automatically boosting these frequencies.
Use Smack Attack for More Punch
If the snare lacks impact, try Smack Attack.
Increase the attack slightly to emphasize the initial transient.
This can be particularly effective on softer snares that aren’t cutting through the instrumental.
But be careful.
Too much transient enhancement can make the snare sound sharp and unnatural.
Step 4: Control the Hi-Hats and Percussion
Hi-hats occupy a very different part of the spectrum than your kick and bass.
Use Renaissance EQ to remove unnecessary low-frequency information and control harsh frequencies if needed.
The goal isn’t necessarily to make your hats brighter.
Sometimes the better move is actually reducing harshness.
If a hi-hat is competing with vocal sibilance, reducing some aggressive upper-mid or high-frequency energy can create room for the singer or rapper.
You can also pan percussion elements around the stereo field.
This creates movement and keeps everything from piling up in the center.
Keep your core elements anchored while allowing supporting percussion to provide width.
Step 5: Mix the 808 and Bass

Step 6: Make the 808 Translate on Smaller Speakers
One problem with deep 808s is that they can sound huge on studio monitors but almost disappear on laptops and phones.

These processors can increase the perception of low-frequency content by generating harmonics above the fundamental bass frequencies.
That means listeners may perceive the bass more clearly even when their speakers can’t reproduce the deepest sub frequencies effectively.
Start subtly.

Instead of making the keys louder to hear them, try creating space for the vocal with subtle EQ.
This is one of the most important concepts in R&B mixing:
Not every instrument needs to sound incredible in solo.
It needs to sound right inside the record.
Step 8: Give Keys and Pads More Width
This is where S1 Stereo Imager can become useful.
Pads, electric pianos, background synths, and atmospheric elements can often benefit from additional width.
But don’t automatically push the stereo image as wide as possible.
Use S1 subtly.
You want the supporting instruments to create a wide environment around the center of the mix.
That leaves space for:
Lead vocal
Kick
Snare
Bass/808
Those elements can establish a strong center while the musical layers create width around them.
That center-versus-sides contrast is one of the easiest ways to make a mix feel larger.
Step 9: Mix Synths Without Overcrowding the Vocal
Modern R&B and Trap Soul productions can contain several synth layers.
You might have:
A main pad.
A bell.
A lead.
A texture.
A counter melody.
An atmospheric sound.
If all of these occupy the same frequency range, your mix quickly becomes congested.
Instead of trying to EQ every instrument into perfection, decide what each sound’s role is.
If the pad provides atmosphere, it doesn’t necessarily need to dominate the midrange.
If the bell provides the melody, give it enough presence to be heard without overwhelming the vocal.
Use Renaissance EQ to carve unnecessary frequencies and S1 to position supporting elements across the stereo field.
Step 10: Mix the Lead Vocal
For R&B especially, the lead vocal is usually the star of the record.
Everything else should support it.
A useful starting vocal chain using Waves Platinum could be:
Renaissance EQ → Renaissance Compressor → Renaissance DeEsser → Renaissance Vox
You don’t necessarily need every processor on every vocal, but this gives you a solid framework.
Vocal EQ With Renaissance EQ
Start by cleaning the vocal.
Remove problematic frequencies before boosting anything.
Potential areas to investigate include:
Below 80–120 Hz: unwanted rumble.
200–500 Hz: muddiness or boxiness.
1–4 kHz: presence and intelligibility.
8–15 kHz: air and brightness.
These frequency ranges will vary dramatically depending on the vocalist and microphone.
Don’t blindly copy settings.
Listen.
Step 11: Compress the Vocal
Try Renaissance Compressor.
For modern Hip Hop and R&B vocals, you usually want the vocal to remain fairly consistent in level.
Start around:
Ratio: 2:1 to 4:1
Attack: 10–30 ms
Release: 40–100 ms
Then adjust the threshold until you’re getting a reasonable amount of gain reduction.
Perhaps 3–6 dB during louder sections.
But don’t obsess over the number.
Listen to whether the vocal feels controlled without becoming lifeless.
Step 12: Use R-Vox for Vocal Consistency
Renaissance Vox is one of the most useful plugins in the entire Platinum collection for vocal-heavy music.
After your initial compression, you can use R-Vox to further stabilize the vocal.
Don’t crush it.
Try another 2–4 dB of gain reduction and listen.
Using two compressors gently can sometimes sound more natural than forcing one compressor to do all of the work.
For example:
Renaissance Compressor: initial dynamic control.
R-Vox: final vocal leveling.
That can help create the controlled, upfront vocal sound associated with modern Hip Hop and R&B.
Step 13: Control Sibilance
Bright vocal recordings can contain aggressive “S” and “T” sounds.
Insert Renaissance DeEsser and locate the problem area.
This often occurs somewhere in the upper frequencies, but the exact location depends on the vocalist.
Reduce only as much as necessary.
Over-de-essing can make vocals sound dull or cause the singer to sound like they’re lisping.
The goal is simply to stop the harsh syllables from jumping out.
Step 14: Create Vocal Depth With H-Delay
Now we get to one of my favorite techniques for R&B vocals:
Delay instead of excessive reverb.
Create an auxiliary send and insert H-Delay.
Try a tempo-synchronized:
1/4-note
1/8-note
or
1/4-note dotted delay.
Filter the delay return so it doesn’t compete with the dry vocal.
You generally don’t need the delay to contain huge amounts of low end or extreme high-frequency detail.
Darkening the repeats can push them behind the lead vocal.
The result is depth without making the vocal feel distant.
Step 15: Add Reverb Without Washing Out the Vocal
You can also create a separate reverb send using one of the reverbs included in Platinum.
For modern R&B, try shorter reverb times first.
A subtle plate or room-style ambience can make the vocal feel polished without pushing it too far into the background.
You can then automate larger reverbs during:
- Chorus sections
- Ad-libs
- Vocal runs
- Transitions
- Outro sections
Automation is often more effective than leaving a giant reverb active throughout the entire song.
Step 16: Mix Background Vocals and Ad-Libs
Background vocals are where you can get much more creative.
Try:
More high-pass filtering
More compression
More reverb
More delay
More stereo width
You can also use S1 to widen background vocal buses.
This creates a useful contrast:
Lead vocal = focused and centered
Background vocals = wide and atmospheric
That difference helps make the lead vocal feel even more important.
For ad-libs, experiment with H-Delay.
Longer delays, filtered repeats, and more aggressive effects can create the atmospheric vocal textures common in Trap Soul and modern R&B.
Step 17: Process the Drum Bus
Once the individual drums sound good, route them to a drum bus.
Try H-Comp for gentle bus compression.
Start with:
Ratio: 2:1
Attack: 20–30 ms
Release: Adjust to the groove
Aim for approximately 1–3 dB of gain reduction.
You aren’t trying to destroy the drums.
You’re trying to make the individual elements feel like one cohesive kit.
Listen to the groove carefully.
If compression makes the drums feel smaller, back off.
Step 18: Use Vitamin for Additional Energy
If your drum bus, instrument bus, or even overall mix feels slightly dull, you can experiment with Vitamin.
Vitamin is a multiband enhancement processor, so it can add presence and energy to different frequency regions.
Be conservative.
You don’t want to completely reshape your mix.
Think:
5% better—not 50% different.
This is especially important when processing your entire mix.
Step 19: Check Your Stereo Image
Before mastering, examine the overall stereo balance.
Your mix should have a strong center.
Usually you’ll want elements such as:
Kick
808/Bass
Lead Vocal
Main Snare
fairly centered.
Then use your other instruments to create width around them.
Pads, background vocals, percussion, effects, and certain synth layers can occupy more of the sides.
S1 can help, but panning and arrangement should do most of the work.
A stereo-imaging plugin should enhance a good stereo arrangement rather than rescue a bad one.
Step 20: Build a Simple Mix Bus Chain
Don’t overcomplicate your mix bus.
A basic Waves Platinum chain could look something like:

But every processor should have a reason for being there.

Use extremely small tonal adjustments if necessary.
If you’re making huge EQ changes on your master bus, there’s probably something earlier in the mix that should be corrected.

You want subtle glue.
